How is your general movement around the court so sharp? Also, how do you get so much spin on the ball? Is it anything to do with the strings you use?
I think movement and fitness are a crucial part of being a tennis player and will help your game at any standard. I spend a lot of time working on specific running sessions suitable for my sport. Once I feel like my endurance is strong enough I will do many repetitions of short burst sprints on court, short sharp movements around cones along with a load of leg weights to become more powerful.
Having a certain string in the racket is a small aspect of getting maximum spin – technique is the real reason. Luxillon string helps the ball rotate after contact but the key is to accelerate through the ball on impact and brush up the back and over the ball. These are the keys to hitting with spin on the serve too. Good luck and I hope you keep improving.
I just wondered are the rumours true that your not so great at Pro Evolution Soccer????
I started playing Pro Evo on Playstation for the first time during the Davis Cup against Poland with all the other team members. I loved it and picked the game up very quickly – I felt I was very good and won the majority of games single handedly!
Everyone played to a good standard apart from my partner – one Daniel Evans, who was for sure the worst player I’ve ever witnessed. He had no clue about the game. Hopefully he can improve with more practice!
When you get to a new place do you try to do some sightseeing and do you enjoy taking pictures? Where’s the most unusual place on earth you’ve found yourself?
I do enjoy travelling alot but unfortunately I dont get to see as much of the amazing cities as I’d like to! I have a camera with me, but due to training, practice and matches it is hard to find time! A place I loved seeing last year was the Great Wall of China, that was incredible. I also loved Malaysia!
Who is your favourite band and what is you favourite genre of music?
I’m a big fan of R&B and have been for a long time. I find that there are a load of new bands out there that I dont know at the moment, but the US music gets me going more these days! I do like Kings of Leon very much tho – that’s often on my iPod!
How serious is this ‘Rossing’ business? It just seems to be getting out of control. Is there an International Arbitrator for this type of thing?
Haha, very good on but unfortunately there isn’t such person. It is all a big laugh but Andy has pushed it hard to try make me look bad. Its all about fantasy football but we are joking around with each other. I’m saying it should be Andying!!
Why do you wear a bandana when your on court? is it true that its an attempt to look more like ‘Wolf’ from Gladiators?
No thats not true as Wolf wasn’t my favourite gladiator!! I actually wear it to keep the sweat out of my eyes and off my face.
I have been following the banter between you and Andy Murray on tweeter…great stuff! Who is the biggest laugh on tour?
Thanks Ali, it is a lot of fun haha! I would say Michael Llodra is one of the biggest laughs…he’s always messing around. Justin Gimelstob was also very loud and funny when he was playing.
What’s the best thing about representing Team GB in the Davis Cup?
The best thing about playing DC is representing my country – there’s no better feeling for me. The team atmosphere is also incredible to be part of.
What has been the worst forfeit you have ever had to do with Team Murray?
I think the worst forfeit was in Montreal when I had to go out to a nice restaurant in cycling shorts and dance for a minute on my own in the middle of the restaurant. I think I dealt with it ok though…I hope!
How do you enjoy being with Team Murray and what are the advantages of hanging and practising with them?
It is always nice to have fellow countrymen at tournament to hang out with, especially my best mate Andy and Miles who I am very close to and have been for a long time. We have a lot of fun and it takes my mind off results and keeps me smiling. Practicing with Andy and Miles…well, hitting with the No.2 in the world is great as he never misses! Also Miles is a great coach who helps me too so I’m very fortunate to have them to practice with so much.
