H&H beat Bhupathi and Knowles to reach the last eight of a Masters 1000 event together for the first time

Ross Hutchins and Stephen Huss are through to the quarter-finals of the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open after beating No.4 seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles 6-4 7-5.

It is Hutchins’ third quarter-final appearance at a Masters 1000 event this year, after reaching the last eight in Miami with Jordan Kerr and Indian Wells with Andy Murray.

The Anglo-Aussie duo, playing their first Masters 1000 event together, registered a repeat of their 2008 French Open triumph against the Indian-Bahamian pair, and now face either Juan Martin Del Potro and Mardy Fish or the Polish No.6 seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in the last eight.

A showdown with the seeded pair could turn into a handy reconnaissance opportunity for Hutchins, with the Polish duo set to face Great Britain in September’s Davis Cup tie in Liverpool.

Hutchins and Huss, who knocked out Spanish wildcards Pablo Andujar and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the opening round, won their first title together in Beijing last September.
